Peripheral Vertigo in the elderly

Abstract
One of the important health problems for the elderly is dizziness, which is major cause of falling leading to disastrous sequelae. The elderly are prone to various disease that affect the balance problems. Although vestibular system, vision, central nerve system and somatosensory system are involved in maintaining balance, most common cause of dizziness is problems of vestibular system. Herein, the pathophysiological backgrounds for age-related change in balance system
are reviewed, followed by a symptom categories of dizziness. The diagnostic strategy for dizziness in elderly, common vestibular diseases and treatment were also discussed.
